German WW2 West Wall Medal awarded in Münster February 28, 1940
This West Wall Medal (Deutsches Schutzwall-Ehrenzeichen) was awarded to Unteroffizier Wilhelm Rothe in Münster, Germany on February 28, 1940. Instituted on August 2, 1939, the West Wall Medal recognized those who contributed to the construction or defense of the Siegfried Line, Germany's western fortifications.
Initially awarded to engineers and workers, eligibility was later expanded to Wehrmacht personnel who served along the defenses for at least ten weeks. After the Allied invasion in 1944, the medal was reissued for those reinforcing the fortifications.
